Important Notice For Query Users

  1. New query tool

    In the coming months, this geographical name query tool will be changing and evolving.  It has been in service for twelve years, and is due for an upgrade.  A new query tool called the Geographical Name Search Service (GNSS) has been available for some time.  Soon, it will be integrated into the Geographical Names of Canada Web site, and replace the current search.

    Although the new name search uses newer technology, and has improved functionality, feedback so far has told us that the interface needs improvement.  Based on comments from our users, we are changing the GNSS display to incorporate the more popular and user-friendly elements of the geographical name query tool.

  2. Mapping utility

    We regret that it is no longer possible to display a map of the area where a name is located when viewing the results of a name query.  The mapping function was provided by a mapping tool called Earthscape, which is no longer available.   Until the GNSS query is integrated into the site, only the national and regional maps will be available with this name query.   We suggest using the GNSS query if a mapping application is needed.  We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
